The Fugitive CHAT map
61CHAT map
The Fugitive is a thriller movie based in Chicago around 1993. In this movie, Dr. Richard Kimble is framed for killing his wife and is thrown in prison. During a bus crash, Kimble escapes and is a fugitive on the run while trying to prove his innocence. The Fugitive was produced by Arnold Kopelson and stars Harrison Ford as Dr. Richard Kimble and Tommy Lee Jones as Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard. This movie is a remake of the original movie “The Fugitive” made in 1963.
Production
This story line of "The Fugitive" is based in Chicago, but includes scenes that were also filmed in North Carolina. Due to the fact that this was a remake of the original movie, there were very high expectations for "The Fugitive" made in 1993. The production budget was roughly $44,000,000. The movie runs for about 130 minutes, and in my personal opinion keeps you intrigued the entire time.
Representation
The Fugitive represents many different aspects. The primary moral of this movie is to never give up on proving yourself, particularly if you are certain you are being mistreated. However, this movie also heavily emphasizes the importance of keeping an open mind. While "The Fugitive" represents the importance of doing this in the legal system, it is also represented the need to keep your mind open about a person as a whole also.
Distribution
The Fugitive premiered August 6th, 1993. The movie has had a life gross income of $183,875,760 just in the country, and $368,875,760 world wide. During opening week the movie grossed 23,758,855 and released in 2,425 theaters across the country. There is no doubt that "The Fugitive", even as a remake, started with a bang.
Reception
"The Fugitive" was widely considered an incredible movie, meaning it was received by all audiences very well. Roger Ebert gave it 4 out of 4 stars and considered it one of the best movies of the year. Tommy Lee Jones won the academy award for best supporting actor, and "The Fugitive" was nominated for many others such as, best picture, best cinematography, best original score and best sound. This movie was also nominated for many different golden globes, and has overall been an incredibly successful production.
Socialization
This movie is a very popular movie, and is a great family movie for kids 13 and older. This movie was distributed by Warner bros. and very commonly is played on TV. There have been many reviews of this movie, along with reviews from the word of mouth, which are rarely negative. According the IMDb critics, this movie was given a 7.8 out of ten and has a metascore of 86 out of 100. Overall, The Fugitive is a great movie that is commonly discussed and enjoyed by people of all ages throughout the world.
Activity
There were many things the writers of this movie had to work on while writing the story line and script. As mentioned before, The Fugitive was originally made in 1963. Therefore the writers of the remake in 1993 had to consider the original story, characters and script, and remain somewhat loyal to those ideas while adding their own. It is a difficult thing to make a remake of a movie, because the audience generally likes there to be a good balance of remaining true to the original while adding new details and ideas to make it worth watching again.
Ecology
This movie required much work between the staff of the production including the producer, writer, editors, cast and distributors. They had a good budget of $44,000,000 and put it to good use. This movie very well represents the original movie, and also is very interesting to see shot in the heart of Chicago. It is a very witty, deep and intellectually sparking movie that intrigues its viewers. I recommend this movie to any one and guarantee it will be worth it!

Social activity – Immediately, I noticed that the introduction paragraph acknowledged that the film is a remake which demonstrates that the story is not original. This helps give me an idea of how the text has been reintroduced throughout the century. The production slide acknowledged the budget and actual film setting but did little to mention how the genre and intended audience influenced the production of the film. For example, you could mention how the director loved the original and was remaking it for his love of cinema (I do not know if this is true), or if the film was successful in the past, and the director wanted to shoot a high action film grossing lots of cash. I liked how you explored the different themes and aspects of the film regarding having an open mind. Once again, you could explore into this and see if this theme is a parallel on something occurring in the real world in relation to society. In the socialization slide, you discussed how the film had rare negative “word of mouth” reviews which will be more believable if you include a citation of a scholarly film critic. This goes the same for the positive reviews. I feel that if you include some positive reviews from eminent film critics, I could have a better sense of the quality of the film. In the socialization slide, you could also include some descriptions of the interactions between producers, writers, director, and actors. Some questions that could answered may be did Harrison Ford actively participate in the production of the film, or did he merely act?
Production- This CHAT map was very short, but each paragraph underneath the slides was full of information on the movie. You got straight to the point for what you were describing and managed to tell us a bunch of things about the film. And I really enjoyed your first slide. It definitely caught my attention and made me want to read about what sounds like a really exciting movie.I don't think I have ever seen this movie since it came out before I was even born, but it sounds really entertaining. I liked knowing that the movie was re-make and that it was shot in Chicago, which is really cool! I would have liked to learn more about the physical production of this film. How was it written? How big was the team of writers? How long did this movie take to shoot? There were lots of questions about the film that were left unanswered for me. I'm glad that you mentioned the writers in a later slide and how they wanted to stay true to the original but make the new version even better. This film had a huge budget so I'm sure there was a lot that went into the production, and it sounds like a good movie that I should go see.
Audience: Right off the bat you mention that the movie was a remake, I thought that this was good as it immediately informed me that the movie already had a fan base when it first came out. This shows that the creators of the film did have an intended audience in mind. I also like that you mentioned that the general age range for the film was for people 13 years old or older on the socialization slide. I was confused though because in the same paragraph you mention that the movie is enjoyed by people of all ages. Maybe being a bit more clear with your wording in the future would help clarify exactly what you are trying to say. You did a good job of showing how well-received the film was by stating all of the different awards it won. You did a good job of including a lot of detail about different aspects of the movie in your slide descriptions but to make them a little more informative you could have explained some of your point a little more clearly. For example, in the activity slide you mention that the creators of the film tried to stay true to some aspects of the original film as well as add their own material. You could have explained how exactly they did this and explained how fans of the original movie felt about the remake. Overall though I thought your CHAT map was very interesting to read and that you did an excellent job.
I really liked how you showed the amount of money made by the movie in the distribution slide, both in the country and worldwide. In the distribution slide, you have a bullet point that says it was aimed at all audience but there is no elaboration underneath the slide about this topic making it seem unimportant. I like how you included the success of the movie by saying it got four out of four stars. However, I would explain briefly who Roger Ebert is and why getting four out of four stars from him would mean much. You do a great job of explaining the popularity of the movie for large audiences. In your receptivity slides I would include what aspects of the movie made it popular. For example, certain scenes, lots of aspects to relate to, etc. I also liked how you mentioned that the movie rarely had negative reviews. As a detail to the main point, you could include a few of the reviews the movie got that were positive to emphasize what you are trying to tell the reader. Overall this was a very informative CHAT map that had main points but that could have benefitted from using a few more details in the slides.
Maddy, I love that you picked a movie that many people probably don’t know about. I also love that the movie you picked was The Fugitive! I do wonder what made you pick it, but I guess I’m rambling. I like how you included the fact that expectations very high for the film since it was a remake, but it would have been interesting to hear a little more background on the first movie. I don’t quite understand what you mean when you say the moral is to never give up on proving yourself, unless you mean proving yourself innocent. In any way, I think that maybe you can just reword that sentence. Also, even though you say its “aimed for all audiences,” I feel like every movie has to be directed towards some demographic. Or, you could discuss how it relates to other movies with the same message. I LOVE that you included an actual review from Roger Ebert, because no one else did. It was also great that you included what awards were won by the movie and its actors. Although some people may tell you this was a little short, I feel like it was the perfect length and amount of content for this type of assignment. Great job Maddy!

I really liked all the pictures on your slides they were inviting and made the presentation look interesting. A few critiques I have are that you should make the font on the slides fill the slide a little more. A few of them were a little small, still readable, but if you are skimming over the slide to preview what you're about to read it is a little small. Also I think you could have used a little more description. The comments below the slides are full of information, but I feel as though there is definitely more information out there for people to know. I like that you explained that there is a wide range of audience that enjoy this movie. The more broad the audience is, the more successful movie will be. This movie seemed to be very successful by the amount of money made. Part of this is probably because it is an action movie and who doesn't like that? Being a remake of a classic movie this had a great to do with the distribution of the movie. Not only did people have high expectations of this movie from past movies, they probably had higher expectations since cinematography had improved since then. Over all I think this was a good CHAT map, but there could be a few areas that could be elaborated on.
Genre Conventions: Right from the get go, I noticed that this movie was definitely an action movie! The first picture on the first slide shows a man running from something and trying to get away, also, your description of the movie under confirmed this thought. Even though I have never seen the movie, I was able to get a good idea of what it is about through your CHAT map, and that is always really helpful! Because it is an action movie, it also makes sense that it would be rated for kids 13 and older because this type of genre corresponds with this age group. You mentioned that this movie was a remake of an original movie in 1963, and I was just wondering how close this remake was to the original movie? While some remakes are spot on, others don't compare with the original, and I was just curious about this one. By how well you recommended it, it seems like it would be great to see either way! Also, since the movie is over two hours, the movie producers and directors would have to put enough content to keep the audience interested. I was also just a little curious about where the inspiration for the remake of this movie came from? Was it a favorite of the director's, or was it just a popular movie that he thought needed to be modernized. Since film has evolved so much within the last 50 years, neither one of those choices would surprise me much. Overall, great CHAT map!
Social Activity: I actually just saw this movie on TV when I was at home last weekend and I had no idea that it was actually a remake. I like how you tied the parts of CHAT together. For instance by tying the aspects of socialization and reception you showed how they both deal with how people received the film and what they thought of it. By including both the critics rating and the ratings of IMDB you showed how both groups of people felt about the movie, which helps show that it was truly an enjoyable movie. By adding information about the fact that the good reviews travel by “word of mouth” you showed that the movie was discussed outside of just ratings on the internet. In the activity section adding that the original screen play was considered in making the film shows that there was a connection between the earlier version and the 1993 version. To possibly improve this map maybe adding information on how the production team worked together as a group would have shown another aspect of socialization. How much did the producers keep from the original movie? Was it almost exactly on the story line or was it very different? Overall I thought this CHAT map was very informative and was well written.

- Presentation Notes
- Use of Citation
I like your standardized use of citation throughout your presentation, and that you drew from a variety of sources for information. To build on this, you'll want to consider adding a few more sources so you can go a bit deeper in the production of the movie, particularly regarding the details of how this film may have differed from other films.
**Production**
- Describing how it's produced
- Acknowledgement of creators
- Describing the research done by the authors
In describing the Production and Ecology, you've pointed out the $44 million that was available for making the film, and that it was mostly set in Chicago with a fair amount of filming in North Carolina. To build on this, you'll want to talk more about the actual filming. Were there difficult days for the actors and producers? Since it was a remake, it might also be good to compare the production processes of this film versus the original as a way to reveal how filmmaking as an art changed over that span of time.
**Genre Conventions**
- Identifying the genre
- Describing the genre conventions
- Showing how these conventions are used.
In Activity, I like the way you describe the delicate balance between being true to the original 1963 film while adding new ones for the remake. You've also talked about the movie's nature as an intense drama, and this would be a good place to talk more about what the expectations are for this type of blockbuster. How did the action scenes in *The Fugitive* compare to similar movies? Was the ending what you hoped for?
**Social Activity**
- Describing social and physical distribution
- Discussing cultural reception
I like the way your Representation section describes the moral of the movie, this importance of keeping an open mind and the importance of never giving up. To build on this, you'll want to give specific examples from the movie where we see these lessons at play. For example, what kinds of hardships does Dr. Kimble go through in his quest to prove his innocence?
**Audience**
- Identifying the intended audience
- Discussing how genre coventions are used to attract that audience
- Indicating audience reception.
I like how you provided the solid figures for how *The Fugitive* performed at the box office - this, coupled with your feeling the movie keeps you interested for the full two hours, tells us that people really have responded well to the movie. To build on this, you'll want to further describe the demographics of this audience and to talk more about their specific responses. I like how you included your own responses to the film - I think your feelings would give a good place for you to start in determining how most people responded to the film, and then relating evidence of this to the very good details you have regarding the critical praise the movie received.
Although I have never seen the movie I do know the title. To say that it is rare for Roger Ebert to give a movie 4 out of 4 stars is an understatement. Harrison Ford has become a household name if not for his portrayal of Indiana Jones or Han Solo then for his role in The Fugitive. The audience consists of those who saw the original and those who never knew that the 1993 version was a remake. The amount of money that this movie made is very impressive, especially since the movie came out the same year as Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List. I thought that the picture on the socialization slide was funny especially the old man in the blue. Its success is also evident by the showings on television. Movies always have some sort of underlying meaning they are trying to convey to the audience such as being yourself and never giving up. As a remake the movie had some huge shoes to fill, yet be different from. Staying true to a hit in a remake yet making it different is complicated. The writers have to decide what to keep and what to add without changing everything. It is kind of like getting someone else’s essay and having to make it your own paper.
Social Activity- First of all (even though it’s not social based) I really liked the look of your Chat map. The slides were very easy to read and interesting to look at. Moving onto the original idea...I liked that you reinforced the fact the movie was a remake which I feel is important because people would have already had opinions or biases about the movie and I’m sure that helped to add to the movie’s success. In the Representation slide you mentioned how the move represents certain themes. While I’ve never seen or heard of the movie I’m sure it is very relatable because of these values. In the Distribution slide, one of the points states that the film was aimed for all audiences. I’m curious to what the film is rated and why it is aimed at all ages because I get the feel that the film might be somewhat violent or have mature themes being a “thriller”. You did a good job showing how well received it was with audiences. As far as improvement I think you could add in more about the writing process and about the filming in Chicago. Other than that good job!
Housekeeping and Production – Your title slide automatically drew me in as a reader with the seemingly action packed movie poster. You were able to pack a lot of information about the movie into each short paragraph describing each slide. I’m glad that you included the fact that the movie is a remake. It really puts the success of the movie in to perspective. I like that you made the photo citations small and out of the way on each slide. This really helped to make the text and pictures the emphasis of each slide. I like that you made the photo citations small and out of the way on each slide. This really helped to make the text and pictures the emphasis of each slide. I also liked that you kept your description citations for the end of each paragraph. On your production slide, it was interesting to learn about the budget of the movie and where it was filmed. However, I would have liked to learn more about how the movie was shot, what the background production behind the movie is, and who helped to produce the film. Overall, I think that your presentation is short, and to the point.
Production—One of the main aspects of your presentation that I liked was the uniformity in the slides. The citations were subtle and therefore did not interfere with the design of each slide. I would just say to make sure you proofread your slides because one of the bullets in the Production slide says “Produced Arnold Kopelson.” Also, I think you should make sure that the points you highlight in the slide are discussed in the description beneath the slide because sometimes they weren’t discussed at all or were mentioned in passing. I liked that you mentioned that the film is a remake, but it would have been interesting to see more comparison between the production of the two films. It was also interesting that you included that the movie was shot in Chicago, as well as the budget of the film. Providing that information as well as the movie’s domestic gross was a good indication of the amount of success the film has achieved. Great job on your chat map; I’ll definitely check it out.
First of all, I loveeeeeee Harrison Ford so great movie pick. I liked how your slides were very short, sweet, and to the point. They didn’t have any unneeded information and I didn’t have to reread the comments to figure out what you were trying to say. They said everything upfront and were easy to follow. I also liked how the comments were shorter because they made me less intimidated to read them. Normally, if I see a long comment I groan on the inside and dread reading it and end up skimming most of it. However, I actually read everything you typed in your comments because they weren’t insanely long, and also because once I realized Harrison Ford might be mentioned quite a bit I wanted to find out more since he is my all-time favorite. I liked how you kept your slides simple. You had short bullet points with one picture and that was it. Very easy to understand and didn’t distract from the point you were trying to get across.
Although I haven’t seen this movie before, I am automatically fond of it. There aren’t enough movies shot in Chicago. In my opinion completely unprofessional opinion, its nice to see a production that takes advantage of Chicago’s rich architecture and culture to set the stage. While many films are produced in New York and Los Angeles, its nice to see a film that has a different vibe to it. I wish that I knew a bit more about the making of the film. It’s nice to see that the film grossed much, much more than its production cost. And since we are talking about it today, it MUST have been interesting enough to keep watching through the decades. And, of course, I will always approve of a movie with Tommy Lee Jones in it (my own personal bias). I didn’t even realize it was a re-make until you reported on it, especially considering that Paramount is not a huge fan of remakes (and historically doesn’t have a long track record for producing remakes). Most remakes are pathetic desecrations of the originals, but its nice to see one that did the original plotline some justice. I have not seen this movie before, but from your description, it sounds like something I need to watch.
Audience- I am glad to see a CHAT map on an older movie that happens to be one of my all-time favorite movies. I did not know that this movie was actually a remake of a 1963 film of the same name. This tells us that the movie must already have a good reception and fan base for them to make a remake of it. The first thing that I noticed about your presentation is that some of the slides looked kind of bare. Maybe you could add a little more text and information to each slide or use another picture to fill up the blank space. I thought you did a good job on your reception slide to show how it was received by stating all the awards that the movie won. I think you could have maybe been a little clearer as to why the movie was received by all audiences very well. Was it because this remake didn’t stray too far away from the 1963 original or was it due to other factors? I like how you used genre conventions to help explain who the intended audiences were for the movie. Since it is an action movie it makes sense that the audience would start around teenage age range. You also did a good job on your research showing what the audience’s reception has been by describing all the awards this movie has received. Overall, you did a great job on your CHAT map and it makes me want to re watch this classic very soon.
-Ben Grider
Production: Overall, your CHAT map is very clear and straight to the point. The little amount of text makes the reader really only focus on the important aspects of each area of the CHAT map. I have never seen The Fugitive, but it seems like an interesting film. I appreciate that you mentioned that this is a remake of a movie from the 60's. I feel like this bit of information is probably vital in all categories and must have had a big effect on the production and reconstruction of the original movie. The mention of any plot was very concise and did not get carried away with details that might take away from the focus of the CHAT map. I would have liked to known how critics or the audience (or even yourself if you saw both films) compared the 1993 version to the 1960's version and if a more modern setting added or took away from the original movie.
This CHAT map was perfect. It had enough information, I have never seen the movie but I felt that I understood all the points you were trying to get at. Also I really liked how you talked about all the money, although I thought this might be boring after reading it I really felt that it showed how much you knew. It made you a reputable source of information. I did not like the slide backgrounds I thought they were a little dark and gloomy. I understand that the movie is not a romantic comedy but you still want to visually interest your audience. Also I did not like the pictures that were used. Some of them seemed small and irrelevant. Overall i really liked your CHAT map but I thought it could have been a lot more visually interesting.

Your title slide was a good start to grab the reader in. The picture and the colors worked well to portray your movie choice. Going with the action of your movie I thought the colors on your slides were chosen respectively. Other than the colors though at times your slides were a little boring. I didn’t like the two slides back to back that were two pictures of people they seemed too similar. Although at first glance it looks like you didn’t have much to say, I found that your descriptions were informative. I particularly enjoyed your socialization slide. I liked that you included an age range of who would really enjoy and understand the movie and you also included ratings of how well the movie did. Throughout your presentation I found many interesting facts like the budget of the movie and roughly how much money the movie has made. These put into perspective how much people responded to the movie. One thing I would change from the presentation was your picture captions. They were so small I almost didn’t notice them at all. They were placed in good spots to not distract from the rest of the slide but they were a little too small and unnoticeable. As a whole I thought your presentation discussed the movie well.
